The Greensboro Farmers Curb Market Host
The Great American Cookout
Saturday June 27, 2015, 8 am – 11:30 am
Something is cooking at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market! That is the Great American Cookout this Saturday June 27th. Patrons and shoppers can come out and not only enjoy the market and a plate of food made with the freshest ingredients, but live music by Louis Allen will be performed from 8 am – 9:00 am and the Old Folkie, Julien McCarthy beginning at 10:00 am. The Market will also provide Hula hoops and other activities for children and like-minded adults. Picnic blankets and lawn chairs are welcome.
The Great American Cookout plate will include two varieties of meat, a serving of grilled vegetables, a grilled peach, and bread for $7 per plate. Proceeds collected from the Great American Cookout will go back to benefit the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market.
Guest Chef and Vendors
Chef John Smith of Harper’s Restaurant will be joining us alongside one of our own Charles Sheppard of Sir Charles Gourmet Sauces in preparing local, pasture raised meats and early summer vegetables from market vendors that will be grilled to perfection. Patrons can enjoy a sampling of these fine foods hot off the grill offered by these vendors:
Meadows Farm
All natural, nitrate-free hot dogs and pasture raised hamburger will be provided from Meadows Farm. Kenneth and Dani Strader produce grass fed beef on Meadows Family Farm in Julian. “We are a family farm dedicated in all that we do to honoring our ancestors. Through honest industry and diligent labor, they have made it possible for us to provide for ourselves and our community by simply continuing a way of life that we love”.
Pine Trough Branch
Bratwurst will be provided by Pine Trough Branch. Hilary and Worth Kimble along with Worth’s sister Jenny, raise their lamb and hogs on pasture. “We are a small diversified family farm growing by ecological practices. All of our animal operations are animal welfare approved and we work with heritage breed pigs and fantastic hair sheep. We strive to make farming our profession”.
Six Gunn Farm
Six Gunn Farm will provide chicken legs. Their meats are family raised, pasture raised, grass fed beef and all chickens are free range. “We raise our meat to help people eat better”.
WeatherHand Farm
Chicken breast, thighs, and wings will be provided by Weatherhand Farm. John Handler and Sharon Weatherly pasture raise their lamb and have free range chickens that they process on Weatherhand Farm, land that has been in Sharon’s family for three generations near Climax in Randolph County. “John and Sharon were both raised on farms and have a great love for the land”.
Massey Creek Farm
Ground pork will be provided by Massey Creek Farm. Raised on the farm in the center of Rockingham County is lamb and Karakachan guard dogs needed to protect them from coyotes and other predators. They also raise pasture-raised pork in both regular cuts and a variety of sausages, and mature hens. “In the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, just north of Greensboro, we farm in the footsteps of our scots-irish ancestors. We specialize in sustainably grown, grass fed meats and eggs”.
Farlow Farm
Onions will be provided by Farlow Farm. Farlow Farm is located in Archdale. Their Community Supported Agriculture contains a variety of the 40 crops they grow at their farm, which is completely pesticide and chemical free. Products include collard greens, Swiss chard, strawberries, potatoes and cucumbers. “Non-certified organic vegetable farm; we grow 40 types of fruits and vegetables from May thru November”.
Smith Farms
Smith farms will be providing zucchini, squash and potatoes. Community Supported Agriculture includes Tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, squash, beans, gourds, watermelons, cantaloupe, honeydew, okra, beets, spinach, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, peanuts, sunflower seeds, eggplant, bell peppers, onions, radish, white and red potatoes. “We are a family farm, and very proud of this land. We offer beautiful flowers, garden seeds, vegetable plants, and farm grown produce”.
Congolina Farm
Beets will be provided by Congolina Farm. Congolina Farm is a garden located at in Brown Summit. The farm is operated by four families all with roots in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They grow vegetables that are traditional to the Democratic Republic of Congo as well as those of North Carolina. “Congolina Farm grows Congo and Carolina produce; we specialize in spinach, root vegetables, and edamame. Our African vegetables are cassava, malabar, and sweet potato leaves”.
Root Down Farm
Carrots will be provided by Root Down Farm. Root Down is a non-certified organic vegetable farm located in the headwaters of the South Hyco Creek watershed, 30 minutes northwest of Durham in the beautiful agricultural community of Cedar Grove. “At Root Down Farm we strive to grow food using methods that: improve soil health, encourage biological diversity in the whole farm ecosystem, and limit off-farm industrial inputs”.
Rudd Farm
Rudd Farm will be providing corn. The Rudd Farm family stopped growing tobacco in 2004 so they could concentrate on growing their strawberry and produce business. Their summer produce includes tomatoes, green peppers, hot peppers, corn, watermelons, cantaloupes, cucumbers, okra, green beans, cabbage, squash, lettuce, potatoes, peas, and onions.
Phillip’s Farm
Phillip’s Farm will be providing peaches. PEACHES N’ CREAM is a family owned produce stand located directly on Hwy 74 in Wadesboro, featuring homemade ice cream and homegrown fruits and vegetables. “We grow most of our own produce specializing in peaches, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries”.
Cheesecakes by Alex
Cheesecakes by Alex will provide fresh baked baguettes. They have their own style of muffins, breads, scones and pastries and are located in downtown Greensboro. Alex is a good friend of ours and is our pancake maker for our Pancake Day events in May and July. “We began at the Greensboro Farmer’s Curb Market in 2002 selling our cheesecakes and since have expanded to offer an array of baked goods”.
