The Friend of Sustainability Award is granted to those fostering sustainability awareness, literacy or action through innovative programs, communications, inclusive partnerships, peer-to-peer outreach, and other pathways. The Market was nominated for this award by a member of the community who felt that the Market was accomplishing sustainability goals in the categories of energy, water, waste, land conservation, and quality of life. GFM Executive Director Lee Mortensen, GFM co-founder David Craft, and GSO Parks and Recreation Director Phil Fleischmann accepted this award presented by Shree Dorestant, Officer of Sustainability and Resilience at City of Greensboro. The #LiveGreen Awards Celebration was held at the Earth Day Celebration at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market on Saturday April 22, 2023.

Here’s a few reasons why GFM was selected to receive the Friend of Sustainability Award:

  • GFM is a producer market and products made or grown must be local and regional, around 100+ miles from the Market which limits cross country shipping and greenhouse gas emissions by keeping it local.
  • Many visitors come carrying their own recycled bags, cloth totes or straw baskets, and GFM established a free, reusable cloth bag program through a donation bag station 8 years ago. This year, in 2023, the Market management leadership and Reconsidered Goods established a partnership where bags are donated from the reuse center to the Curb Market to keep up with the demand and supply of the bag popularity.
  • Plants and veggie starters are available at the Market. Many plant growers recycle and reuse plant containers limiting what is going into the landfill.
  • The market is a place for local artists and crafters offer upcycled items made from repurposed and reconsidered goods.
  • The Curb Market has become an environmental education hub with monthly displays from the Recycling Center, Climate Interactive and EnRoads Climate Simulation, Water Conservation, Solar Panels, Cycling Clubs and e-bike supporters to name a few groups who have a regular presence at the market.
  • GFM provides a place of community and inspires visitors to think in more sustainable ways with educational resources and good sustainable practices by customers and vendors alike.
Visitors on Earth Day created their own t-shirt shopping bag to reuse again and again
