Food Security/Customer Service Ambassador

Greensboro Farmers Market, Inc. is hiring a Market Ambassador. This person will be responsible for the Market’s Food Security benefit programs and supporting the customer service station on Market days.

The ideal candidate will have interest in the local food systems and be able to demonstrate a passion for local food, farming, and a basic understanding of local food economies, food outreach, health, and nutrition or knowledge
about food security, food justice, and local food advocacy.

Description

  • Attend all Saturday markets with the primary responsibility for serving food insecure customers. Successful applicants may also serve if available on Wednesdays morning seasonally (May to October, holiday events).
  • GFM Food Security Programs include SNAP, Double SNAP, Orange Card Token Programs, Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program Vouchers (WIC & Seniors) and Farmers FoodShare. Successful candidates will perform all functions associated with each of these programs. Including
    • Processing customer requests to debit their SNAP accounts,
    • Distributing tokens to customers,
    • Accepting returned tokens from vendors,
    • Reconciling returned tokens distribution and acceptance,
    • Distribute token redemption checks to vendors upon direction,
    • Assist floor operation manager with program compliance; i.e., organize forms for vendors to complete annually, post and distribute signage as needed.
  • Customer Information
    • Answer customer questions in a timely manner,
    • Process merchandise and ticket sales to fundraiser events via cash, check or debit card, and
    • Respond to customer and vendor needs and communicate key items to the management team.
  • Must be able to operate Square, IPAD, SNAP/EBT processing equipment, and accurately count money.

Pay is $13 to $15 an hour. Starting pay is $13.00 an hour with a 90-day performance review. The Saturday shift is 7am-12:30pm. Wednesday shift is 7am-11am April/May to mid-October. The ideal candidate is willing to make at least a one year commitment to the organization from hire date.

Candidate Desired Skills & Experience Required

  • Successful Retail, Box Office and/or Cashier past performance.
  • Demonstrate attention to detailed logs and record-keeping, filling, etc.
  • Have demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast- paced environment, both independently and as part of a team,
  • Be experienced in customer service (problem solving and conflict resolution) as well as have excellent communication skills, a positive and energetic attitude, and the ability to form positive professional relationships with a wide range of people including vendors, customers, and partner agencies,
  • Have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with teams of individuals and colleagues,
  • Ability to compute simple operations with and without the use of a calculator, and neat handwriting
  • Have strong verbal communication skills,
  • Be confident working with people from diverse backgrounds, and
  • Spanish Language proficiency ideal, not required.

  • The ability to lift 35 pounds
  • The ability to stand for 5+ hours with minimal opportunities to sit down
