Greensboro, NC – Greensboro Farmers Curb Market will host its Annual Tomato Celebration Day on Saturday, August 10th from 9 am – noon on the lawn at the corner of Lindsay & Yanceyville Streets (501 Yanceyville Street). The event includes a tomato tasting bar and brunch tasting plate featuring tomatoes both fresh and prepared.
Greensboro chefs, restaurants and food enthusiasts all unite for a celebration of summer’s favorite “fruit,” the tomato. In years past the Market has put the seasonal favorite on a pedestal with the “BLT” contest in which chefs from local restaurants participated.
This summer the Market will offer a “Tomato Taster” brunch plate. Tasting plates will be available for a minimum donation of $7 per person and will include samples of:
● Open face tomato and bacon slider by Chris Scalici of Artistic Cuisine
● Tomato and cucumber salad made by Donya Mullins of A Southern Soul
● Tomato consommé by Steve Terrill of Red Chair Dinners
● Tomato pie by Brandy Sears of Foodie Call of the Triad
● Tomato and egg scramble by Ashley Hogan of the Curb Market
Patrons are invited to sample and vote for the “tastiest tomato” from the “Tomato Tasting Bar” with more than 10 varieties of in-season tomatoes. Market patrons may sample and vote for their favorite variety of tomato including Pink Girls, Goliath, Carolina Gold, German Johnson, Better Boy, Big Beef, Mountain Fresh, Heirloom Cherry, and Cherokee Purple.
The “Tastiest Tomato” title in 2018 was awarded to Woody Singletary of Woody’s Eggs and Greens.
Patrons may also purchase a prepackaged “Fried Green Tomato Fixing Kit” to make their own fried green tomatoes at home. The kits will include includes corn meal from Old Mill of Guilford. The “Fried Green Tomato Fixing Kit” can be pre-ordered beginning July 18, while supplies last: https://ticketmetriad.com/events/Tomato-Celebration-Day-8-10-2019.
