FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Greensboro, NC –

The Greensboro Farmers Curb Market, one of North Carolina’s oldest continuing farmers markets, is celebrating their Sesquicentennial anniversary in 2024. 150 years have passed since the initial opening of a Market house in 1874 on the eastern edge of the downtown business district. This Market house operated until 1906, reopening in 1922 on Commerce Place as an open-air Market, with an indoor portion added later. Throughout the years the Market experienced challenges of all sorts: conflicts of interest, closures, and even fire, before finally moving to its current location at the old National Guard armory on Yanceyville Street in 1963, where it has operated continuously, without interruption, to this day. Greensboro Farmers Market, Inc. was formed in 2012 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) to operate the Market on behalf of the City of Greensboro.

Between 1963 and now, generations of farming families and small businesses entrepreneurs have sold their locally produced goods to the denizens of Greensboro and are set to continue well into the future.

The Market will be celebrating its 150th anniversary all year-long beginning with monthly history exhibitions during Saturday Market to highlight the people and stories of farming in NC and culminating into a huge celebration at the end of the year (more details to follow in the coming months).

Each month will feature a theme in farming history, such as the history of planting season, timeline of farmers markets, and recognizing contributions made from different groups in farming and how that has shaped local identity.

We will have a kick-off and calendar release on Saturday February 10th, 8am-12pm alongside the Saturday farmers market. Come check out our first 150th history exhibition featuring the history and stories of the NC Black Farming Experience, in observance of Black History Month.

150th Anniversary history exhibitions are in addition to our great line-up of events, including Curiosities at the Curb, Plant Sale, MADE 4 Market craft shows, Earth Day Fair, and local food events: French Toast Day (coming soon March 23rd), Berry Pancakes, Peach Celebration, BLT Day, and more! It’s going to be a fantastic year at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market, so we hope you come out.

Keep an eye out for 150th commemorative merch dropping this year!
