Market Assistant Position Available
The Greensboro Farmers Curb Market Inc. is a year-round indoor farmers market located at 501 Yanceyville Street. Greensboro Farmers Market, Inc. (GFM) operates the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market on behalf of the City of Greensboro. GFM is a “501c3” nonprofit.
GFM provides greater Greensboro with opportunities to purchase and learn about local food and setting. GFM encourages and supports the growth of local foods and artisan goods businesses to improve greater Greensboro’s economy, support better health through healthy eating and build social and community connections.
The 120,000 customers that attend the market each season are drawn by the vibrant mix of vendor product and wares and by a variety of events featuring seasonal products, sampling, live music, and special theme days. GFM runs a Saturday morning market (7am to 12 noon year-round)) with over 75 vendors at peak season and a smaller Wednesday morning market (8am to 1 pm April-December). Our vendors are from within 100 miles of the market and produce what they sell. GFM makes healthy food easily accessible to its diverse patron base. The market accepts WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Vouchers. GFM matches SNAP recipient withdrawals up to $15 using grants from several local foundations.
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to work in an often fast-paced environment
- Comfort adjusting to variable work conditions (in office and market, weather) and changing priorities
- Strong intrapersonal and communication skills
- Adept at establishing and maintaining strong and respectful professional relationships, pleasant demeanor
- Outstanding customer service skills
- Command of Excel and capacity to work with numbers, count cash and perform simple math
- Good problem solving skills
- Effective time management skills and ability to accomplish work related duties with minimal supervision
- Ability to work with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to lift 25 lbs (on an occasional basis)
Desirable Qualification:
- Background/knowledge in local food systems and/or community programs
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel
Education Level: High school diploma or GED equivalent or greater
Hours: This is a year round, part-time position with the expectation that the Market Assistant will work an average of 15- 20 hours per week, depending on the season. Midweek and Week-end (and less frequently evening) hours are required.
Compensation: $10/hour depending on experience, opportunity for advancement, no benefits included
Job Duties:
- Administrative support: Answer phones, receive visitors, file invoices
- During Market: operating credit card/EBT machine, counting out tokens, and as needed, assisting customers and volunteers, taking customer counts and working with community organizations
- Track and record SNAP reconcile duties including counting cash and market tokens as needed
- Track and record data
- Assist with errands to support market functions and events
- Additional tasks as assigned by the Market Manager to support general market operations
