Gorilla Grains owner Alicia Rehburg (left) sells her homemade granola at the Market. Alicia got the idea to start a granola business through her time as a mother. Her children would often ask for snacks throughout the day, and she noticed that she often ended up giving them food that wasn’t very healthy for them. Inspired by her mother’s recipe, Alicia began making granola to help her kids eat healthier, and this encouraged her to create a business centered around family life and values. She has enjoyed the journey of developing Gorilla Grains because it’s helped shape her to be both the mother and the person she is today.
In 2008, Alicia’s friend suggested that she try selling Gorilla Grains at the Market. Her husband had attended the Market previously and wasn’t sure granola would be successful here, but when she vended for the first time, she sold out of her product by 10:00 am. Alicia and her husband were thrilled about the experience, and it motivated her to continue vending here ever since. For Alicia, there are many aspects of the Market that she loves, but she sums it up through the phrase “human connection.” Customers and vendors alike develop deep, meaningful relationships with each other while they’re here, and she believes this community makes the Market a vital part of the Greensboro area.
