Gorilla Grains, what a great way to start your morning. The path to Alicia Rehberg’s Gorilla Grains wasn’t easy. In her words, “My first mistake; I married a chef.” While that may have seemed like a mistake for this Arizona farm girl raised on wholesome, health foods, Steve and Alicia’s partnership not only produced wonderful children, it led to tasty, natural granola.
As a chef from a family owned restaurant in Detroit, Michigan, Steve likes food that tastes good. The conflict between being healthy and eating delicious food sent Alicia on a fourteen year journey toward Gorilla Grains. The result was a healthy and delicious product that changed Steve’s mind about granola.
A great product deserves a great name and Alicia wanted a name “that was original, fun, creative, and out of the box.” One morning “Gorilla Grains” popped into her head. Using premium organic oats makes her granola strong and powerful and Gorilla Grains is a fun, strong name. The tag-line, “Eat Strong. Swing Long,” promotes the message of Gorilla Grains. It’s fuel for your fun.
Alicia’s original recipe version uses organic oats, butter, brown sugar, powdered milk, and salt. Her second adds dried cranberries and walnuts. Alicia says she’s had a lot of fun with Gorilla Grains – building the business, learning new ways to market it, and building relationships; especially at the Market.
Whether Alicia or Steve has Market duty (pleasure) on your next Market Saturday, be sure to sample Gorilla Grains. While you’re there, ask about her passion for food, or how they met. It’s a good story, as Alicia tells it; although we don’t have Steve’s version yet, maybe you can get it.
