Vendors at the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market (GFM) now accept Supplemental Nutrition Assurance Program (SNAP) benefits in as payment for food and produce.
SNAP is a program of the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP was formerly known as Food Stamps. SNAP benefits are distributed on electronic benefits transaction (EBT) cards. For questions regarding SNAP or to apply to receive SNAP, contact the Guilford County Department of Social Services at (336) 641-3000.
To use their benefits, SNAP recipients “swipe” their cards at the Market Manager’s station for the dollar amounts they choose. In return, they receive wooden one-dollar tokens to buy food and produce from participating vendors. Vendors redeem the tokens they receive for payments from Greensboro Farmers Market, Inc. GFM is then reimbursed by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Tokens were provided by the Department of Public Health via a Farmers Market Promotion Program Grant.
