The new position expands the Market and non-profit’s capabilities.  Ms. Nigro’s duties include community outreach, market support and coordination of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) at the Market.  Ms. Nigro will join Executive Director/Market Manager Lee Mortensen and Donna Myers, Market Coordinator/Special Events.  “Kat’s energy and enthusiasm for fresh local foods accessibility along with her proven leadership skills will help expand Market programs and increase our community outreach efforts within the community,” notes Ms. Mortensen.

Kat worked for the Carrboro Farmers’ Market for two years where she managed its SNAP program and served as the Event and Children’s Program Intern and coordinated Tomato Day, Student Appreciation Day, Seedling Day, and Strawberry Jamboree.

Kat also volunteered at TABLE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hungry children with emergency food relief as well as well as regional nonprofits with focuses on  river cleanup and environmental education.

Kat graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in Environmental Science, Sustainability and Exercise and Sport Science in May 2015. She was captain of her collegiate varsity soccer team, which won the NCAA National Championship in 2011.

Growing up on a farm in rural Livingston, Tennessee, Kat developed a love for environmental education and sustainable agriculture at a young age; she has always seen food systems as a part of her career path.

“I am beyond excited for the opportunity to work for the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market and help it continue to grow within the community,” Kat says. “Greensboro is ranked in the top five nationally in food insecurity and organizations like GFM help provide the community with a vibrant and resilient local food system to help combat this issue. The benefits of a farmers market are vast. Markets encourage  healthier individual eating, develop  a stronger local economy and connects farmers with consumers.”
